About Maya Thompson
Grief lives in the body. So does inherited grief. My work is meeting both with the same respect.
Maya Thompson is a Registered Psychotherapist practicing in Calgary with a focus on grief, body-based therapy, and movement integration. She has seven years of clinical experience.
Her practice centres on clients carrying loss — personal grief, ancestral grief, the specific weight of being a Black woman in a city that doesn't always see her. Maya integrates body-based modalities with traditional talk therapy because she's learned that grief lives somewhere words alone can't reach.
Maya holds training in somatic experiencing, EMDR, and culturally responsive grief work. She works primarily with Black women aged 25-55 and accepts referrals from facilities specializing in movement and embodiment work.
Session formats: In-person at the Inglewood office (60-min sessions) and virtual. Insurance billing supported.
How my background shapes my work
I lost my grandmother in my second year of training. The grief was hers, mine, my mother's, and a hundred years of women in our line all at once. That experience taught me what intergenerational grief actually feels like in the body — and how clinical training alone doesn't reach it.
